Despite the efforts of eco-friendly businesses in prioritizing sustainability, it has been challenging to encourage consumers to proactively shop green & local.

How might we encourage consumers to proactively shop with local environmentally friendly businesses?

What we want:
To conceptualize an app that will help eco-friendly businesses become more visible & efficient for consumers to find & to motivate people to shop green.

Empathize & Define: Research

In order to overcome these challenges, we needed to understand what the consumers wanted & what are their intentions while shopping. With this information, it then will allow us to curate specific features for the app that would be accustomed to them.

For this project, my team & I surveyed 32 people & asked questions that would help determine what common characteristics there were for those who shop & desired to shop environmentally friendly.

What would incentivize you to shop
more eco-friendly?

Values/Transparency

Following these questions, we gathered the statistics of our potential users.
We then began to configure what these users may be, what are their ideals & conflicts, & how exactly were they going to meet their goal.

Which in this case, the ultimate goal for the app is for users to discover local eco-friendly businesses.

Affinity Map

To integrate the information gathered from the survey, we laid out the responses & there were visible characteristics that were similar to one another.

Empathy Map

Created a visualization to help us articulate what our users needs are and to help us gain deeper insight of our ideal consumers.

Personas

To better define who exactly we are trying to create this app for, we curated some personas based from the survey and research results. Here we'd like to introduce Kristine and Dough.

User Flow

After discovering the details that would improve the user's experience, we configured different journeys that users may take from the start to the end.

Ideate: Brainstorming & Development

After analyzing similar apps that are on the market, we gathered inspiration from those concepts.

Example of similar apps concept would be Yelp and Food Delivery apps. We incorporated the conveniency and great user navigation into our idea.

Prototype & Test: User Testing

User Testing

For our user testing, we were able to test 6 users. With that we gain a lot of insight as to how people navigate & work mobile apps.

This testing was moderated & done in person. We wanted to instruct the users with specific directions to see how their thought process works.

Key Insights gathered from results:

  • People navigate through apps based off of familiarity.

  • They also gravitate towards special & unique aspects, but that are still minimal & straight forward.

Adhering to the information, we adjusted our frames to better accustom these aspects in mind.

Delivery & Branding

Style Guide

To ensure that we instill some concept of organic, nature, & being eco-friendly we created a style guide that would better help us achieve those aesthetics.

For the logo design, I was able to incorporate a sprout & a shopping bag which evokes shopping environmentally friendly.

Latest Prototype

Although there is still much to research & improve, the challenge of discovering local eco-friendly businesses and encouraging people to support them can be overcome with the help of EnviroShop.

Within this prototype below, it takes the user through a simple navigation from start to finish.
